Heaton, Markland Hill and Lostock

Heaton is a mostly residential district of Bolton, and lies north west of Bolton town centre, south of Smithills. Heaton also borders Halliwell to the east. The area of Heaton changes significantly across its geography – on its easterly edge near Halliwell, Heaton is mostly rows of 2- and 3-bedroom terraced houses, though just ½ mile west of this area you will enter the more affluent area of Heaton where it is common to find million-pound homes with private grounds and long sweeping driveways.

The main road through Heaton is Chorley New Road. With its many leafy cul-de-sacs and well-kept streets on each side of the main road, the residential areas surrounding Chorley New Road are widely considered some of the most affluent areas in Bolton, featuring some it's the largest and most premium homes, both old and new.

In the area of Heaton closest to Bolton town centre is Bolton School – Bolton School is an independent day school which comprises a co-educational nursery, co-educational infant school, single sex junior schools and single sex senior schools, including sixth forms. With almost 2,400 pupils it is one of the largest independent day schools in the country.

Markland Hill is a suburb within the north west corner of Heaton, bordering Doffcocker. Markland Hill features a Racquets Club and the popular Victoria Inn (commonly known as Fanny’s amongst locals). Another popular bar and restaurant in the area is Retreat on Chorley New Road.

Driving out of Bolton town centre on Chorley New Road, once you have passed through the areas of Heaton and the junction of Victoria and Beaumont Road, you will be in the area of Lostock. Much like the areas of Heaton and Markland Hill, Lostock is considered one of Bolton’s more affluent areas, and features a private nursery and preparatory school (Clevelands), a small train station, and sporting clubs such as Lostock Tennis Club, Bolton Golf Club, and Regent Park Golf Course.

Lostock, along with Heaton, Markland Hill, and pockets of Turton and Smithills are generally thought to be the most expensive places to live in Bolton.

Chorley New Road cuts directly through the areas of Heaton, Markland Hill, and Lostock, leading directly to the far west areas of Bolton that are Middlebrook and Horwich. Chorley New Road also provides indirect access (via Beaumont Road) to the south westerly area of Bolton that is Westhoughton.
